As in the case of fasting and pilgrimage, the lunar month is used in the calculation of zakat. In order for zakat to be obligatory, a lunar year must pass over the nisab amount of wealth. Nevertheless, if the owner wishes, he can pay zakat on his nisab amount of wealth even before the time comes.
