IHH in Somalia on the occasion of Orphan Solidarity Days
Various activities have been organized in Somalia by the IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation as part of 2012 Orphan Solidarity Days.
Africa, Somalia 26.03.2012

IHH teams visited orphans who are cared thanks to the foundation’s Sponsor Family System and presented them various gifts. Forty-eight heads of cattle were slaughtered in capital city of Mogadishu and their meat was delivered to the orphans and families in need. In addition, 150 Somali families were given the chance to return back their home as part of the “Back to Home Project,” jointly organized by the IHH and Qatari Red Crescent. 1,500 other families are also expected to return their homes as part of this project.

Adele Refugee Camp was the first place visited by the IHH teams in Somalia. 1,350 students are offered education in this camp while 300 orphans here are cared by the IHH. IHH members visited the orphans in this camp, embraced them and listened to their problems. Monthly allowances of 300 orphans who live in the camp and cared by the IHH were handed to the officials in the camp while various gifts were given to the orphans.

Carrying out humanitarian relief activities in Somalia for about 10 years, IHH has stepped up its humanitarian efforts in the country following a drought which hit the region severely last year. Now, the foundation is caring for a total of 3,030 orphans.

Culture and arts editor of Yeni Akit daily, Ahmet Can, was among the members of the IHH team which travelled to Somalia. Yeni Akit has undertaken the care of 1,200 orphans in the country following an orphan relief campaign jointly organized by the daily and the IHH. Can delivered gifts to the orphans in the region on behalf of his daily and conveyed the greetings of the readers of his newspaper to the orphans.

Visiting the Adele Refugee Camp, IHH teams later travelled to Mogadishu where they slaughtered 48 heads of cattle and delivered their meat to the orphans and the families in need. IHH teams later visited a mobile hospital established by the Turkish Ministry of Health in Somalia and received information from the doctors there about the relief efforts in the region.

In the wake of a heavy drought which hit the country, millions of people had to leave their homes in Somalia last year and take refuge in neighboring countries mainly in Kenya and other regions of Somalia in search of food and water.
