Afghanistan 22.10.2010

Long years of war and occupation have brought Afghan education system to the brink of collapse. Literacy rate in Afghanistan is around 10 percent, well below the world average. It is even lower in regions far from the capital Kabul.

Majority of smart Afghan youngsters have no access to education because of economic and political stability in the country. The IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation is supporting the Afghan youth by providing instruction in natural sciences at centers it opened across Afghanistan. The project is directed at high-school students who want to attend university and the classes are free-of-charge. Launched last January the centers have offered instruction to 7,793 students so far. The centers have raised achievement rate at university entrances examinations from 40 to 90 percent.

The foundation is now opening the centers for the second semester of the education year. The centers in Nargarhar and Takhar regions will accept 8,000 students for the semester. In addition to instruction in mathematics, physics, chemistry, geometry, and English, the students are also taught religious subjects.

Families of the students who cannot afford sending their children to private teaching centers thanked donors who made these centers possible.
