Palestine, MiddleEast, Turkey 26.03.2011

The council adopted the resolution by a vote of 37 in favor, 1 against, and 8 abstentions out of 46 members of the council. Turkey said it welcomes the increase of support to the decision.

Countries such as the UK, Spain, France, Belgium, Norway, Switzerland and Japan which abstained from a vote earlier voted in favor of the resolution this time.

In a statement on Friday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry voiced its content with the adoption of the resolution and said: “This development confirms the justness of Turkey’s expectations and its reactions against Israel’s violation of human rights during the Mavi Marmara assault.”

Turkey’s justness has been confirmed

The Foreign Ministry statement said taking necessary steps based on conclusions made by UN Human Rights Council’s fact-finding mission with respect to a lethal Israeli raid into Mavi Marmara ship are among its priorities.

The report of the independent international Fact-Finding Mission on the humanitarian flotilla incident found that the Israeli blockade on Gaza is illegitimate, the conduct of the Israeli military and other personnel towards the flotilla passengers was not only disproportionate to the occasion but demonstrated levels of totally unnecessary and incredible violence and that Israel heavily violated international humanitarian law and human rights law.
