Clean water sources are rapidly decreasing due to various problems such as waste, climate change, industrialization and pollution. It is estimated that by 2030, 700 million people will migrate from their areas of residence due to water scarcity. According to international reports, 844 million people worldwide do not have access to clean drinking water. Each year, nearly 850,000 people lose their lives due to unsafe water, inadequate sanitation, and hand contamination-related diarrhea.

14,204 water wells

In total, IHH has opened a total of 14,204 water wells since 2000. Opened in 42 countries, these water wells have provided clean water access to millions of people.

In 2023, IHH has completed its water well projects in:

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Benin, Chad, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Somalia, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Togo and Uganda.

Preliminary water analysis

Most of IHH-constructed water wells are located in rural areas; far from capital cities and population centers, where the need is paramount. The water well site-determination, needs assessment, feasibility, and monitoring activities are carried out by expert teams, and water analysis is conducted prior to each water well project. IHH takes responsibility for the control and maintenance of the water wells for a period of two years, after which the responsibility is transferred to the local community.
