Africa, Sudan 03.01.2012

The first leg of the 12,000 cataract surgeries which will jointly be conducted by Al-Birr and Tawasul Organization and the Turkish Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA), began in Sudan’s Kassala province.

Doctors who will carry out the surgeries went to Kassala from the capital city of Khartoum along with the necessary medical supplies. Three doctors and dozens of medical staff take part in the organization. Cataract surgeries began after a ribbon-cutting ceremony by the head of the Al-Birr and Tawasul Organization at the Kassala Education Hospital.

Cataract patients who were listed during medical examinations earlier were accepted by the doctors one by one for the surgeries. A total of 500 cataract surgeries are expected to be carried out in Kassala during a period of 10 days. Thirty cataract patients regained their vision on the first day of the surgeries. Tens of other cataract patients who filled the hospital’s courtyard after they heard about the IHH cataract project are hopefully waiting for the moment when they will regain their vision.
