Iran 13.08.2012

According to initial records, two earthquakes which hit Iran on Saturday claimed the lives of more than 300 people and injured around 2,500 others. The quakes which registered 6.0 and 6.2 on the Richter scale also left 16,000 people homeless. It is reported that half of the 600 villages in the region sustained damage while 12 of them were completely destructed after the quakes.

IHH team also joined search and rescue efforts in Iran along with Iranian Red Crescent. Search and rescue efforts are mostly conducted in Verzegan, Heris and Eher which are located in northwestern Iran and south of Azerbaijan.

Iran has nearly ended the search and rescue efforts and delivered food and tents to the quake victims, yet problems persist in some villages. IHH aid teams will visit these villages today and make a study about their needs.

In addition, making examinations in the region, IHH teams will also prepare a report regarding the needs of the quake survivors such as food and shelter. IHH will shape its relief efforts in the region in accordance with this report. IHH is keeping a second emergency aid team on alert in case of another earthquake in the same region.
