IHH delivers food to Malian refugees
IHH has delivered food to Malian refugees staying at Mberra Refugee Camp in Mauritania.
Africa, Mali 11.05.2012

IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation has delivered food to Malians at Mberra Refugee Camp in Mauritania where they had taken refugee due to the political instability in their country.

Many people in Mali had to leave their homes due to the ongoing conflicts between Tuareg warriors and Malian army in the north of the country.

Malians coming from provinces such as Timbuktu, Gao and Tidal took refuge at the Mberra Refugee Camp located in Bakunu town on the Mauritanian border.

There is a food and water shortage in the UN-monitored camp in addition to the health problems. There is not enough number of medics or medical supplies in the camp.

An IHH aid team recently made examinations at the Mberra Refugee Camp to take aid to the refugees there.

According to data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), there are 62,000 refugees in the camp.

There are also Tuareg and Arab refugees in the camp who fled Azawad region which unilaterally declared its independence from Mali.

Observing the problems of the refugees in the camp, IHH aid team delivered food to the refugees there.

IHH team also delivered meat to the refugees in line with their requests because they had been living on rice since January.

The refugees who did not eat anything other than meat for a long while were very happy about the delivery of food in the camp.

If the political instability in the country caused by a coup on March 22 persists, more refugees are expected to come to the region.

While the UN tries to expand the camp, IHH has launched work to take aid to the region speedily.
