IHH establishes water treatment unit in Pakistan’s Sukkur
IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation has established a water treatment unit in Pakistan’s Sukkur to resolve the shortage of clean water in the city. A flood disaster which hit the country in early July
Pakistan, Poland 02.07.2011

Much of the land surface of Pakistan was flooded last year. Although it has been around one year since the disaster, there are still major problems in some parts of the country.

One of the cities which were heavily affected by the floods most heavily is Sukkur, one of the three largest cities of Sindh province. Sukkur, which is home to 700,000, is like the granary of the region but last year’s floods severely ruined the city and hundreds of its villages where floods inundated agricultural fields and severely damaged thousands of houses.

One of the major problems faced by Sukkur was the complete damage of its water supply network by the floods. Although it has been a year since the disaster, there is still shortage of clean water in the city. The IHH which has been carrying out relief efforts in Pakistan since the first days of the flood disaster in the country had sent to a water treatment unit with a capacity to purify 100 tons of water daily to the country on board the Defne Y, a humanitarian aid ship.

The water treatment unit was established in the city center. Around 10,000 families currently benefit from the unit which works at full capacity. The water which is purified by the unit is taken from a water well which was opened thanks to donations from IHH women volunteers in Üsküdar, İstanbul. People living in the region will have access to clean water more easily thanks to the water treatment unit for whose establishment IDEAL company also contributed.
