Fatmata Calloh’s Forgotten Taste
Serdar Gürçay 30.03.2026

Fatmata Calloh lives with her children in a one-room home in Sierra Leone. Her husband passed away eight years ago while working as a fisherman.

“I was left alone with my children. I had no choice but to start working,” she says.

She earns 1,000 Leons a month. 125 of that goes to rent. With what remains, she tries to make it through the month.

“The roof of our home was leaking. I was only able to have it fixed yesterday,” she says.

Most days, the family eats fish and rice. Meat is something they have almost forgotten.

“We keep eating fish and rice because they are the cheapest. Even fish is only possible every other day. I do not even remember the last time we ate meat.”

This Eid al-Adha, the Qurbani meat delivered to Fatmata will change what is cooked in her kitchen.

“With the Qurbani meat you brought, I will make a good meat soup for my children today. I am sure they will love it. May Allah be pleased with you.”
