Republic of the Gambia is the smallest country in Africa. The country declared its independence from the United Kingdom on 18 February 1965 and joined the Commonwealth of Nations. The capital city is Banjul. Adherents of Islam constitute more than 90 percent of the population. Sukuta is a village in western Gambia with a population of 35,000 people, 70 percent of whom are living below poverty line.     

IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation is carrying on materializing long-lasting projects to help local populations become self-sufficient in addition to offering emergency relief deliveries. In this regard, the foundation set up a Garden Agriculture School in the yard of the village’s Quran School to do agricultural production. To this end, necessary gardening tools were purchased and electric installments were put in place to carry water from a newly-built well to the garden.

The Quran School in Sukuta is presently providing shelter to 40 students but lacked enough sources to function without external assistance. With the new project, the students staying at the school were provided with basic foodstuffs and other needs of the school were met when products grown in the garden were sold.  

Thanks to the project, the school is now offering more quality education since basic needs of the 40 students and teachers of the school have been met.
