IHH extends helping hand to Muslims in Burundi
An aid team from IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation which travelled to Burundi in the aftermath of a flood disaster last month has provided accommodation and clothing to the flood victims.
Africa, Burundi 02.02.2013

Life in Buyenzi in Bujumbura province of Burundi was paralyzed due to flash floods caused by heavy rains last month. Dozens of houses collapsed while hundreds of others were damaged in the city where 1,600 Muslim families live.

After a local notified IHH about the disaster in the region, IHH dispatched an aid team to the region from IHH Rwanda Office. The aid team provided clothing and accommodation to the flood victims, with a value of 7,000 euros.

Being one of the poorest countries in the world, Burundi is located in Central Africa, in Great Lakes. The name of the country came to prominence in mid 1990s due to the incidents in neighboring Rwanda. According to information from IHH aid team, three people lost their lives, four others were heavily injured while more than 500 people were left homeless in the latest flood disaster.

Problems in Burundi, which witnessed clashes among different ethnic groups for decades, remain unsolved due to poverty. People of Burundi who cannot even afford to buy food, clothing, clean water, healthcare services and fuel for heating are deprived of the means they need to improve their lives.

In the meantime, flood victims have offered their thanks to IHH for the aid the foundation has provided to them and said it was the first time in the history of Burundi that a helping hand was extended to the people of the country from outside. Sending a letter to IHH head office, Muslims in Burundi said they expect IHH’s relief efforts in the country to continue.
