Forest Fires Continue in the Turkmen Villages of Bayırbucak
The forest fire that started on July 5 in the Bayır-Bucak area of Turkmen Mountain, located in the Latakia province of Syria, rapidly spread over a wide area due to the wind. Efforts to extinguish the fire are ongoing. Teams from İHH Disaster Management also mobilized to the fire zone to assist with the firefighting efforts.

Many villages around Bayırbucak and Qastal Ma‘af have been affected by the fires. Difficult terrain, mined areas, and the wind contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

The Syrian Ministry of Disaster and Emergency Affairs dispatched more than 62 firefighting teams and nearly 250 personnel. Airborne interventions were reinforced with helicopters from Turkey, Jordan, and Lebanon. Türkiye provided 2 planes, 11 vehicles, and personnel support.

The fires spread quickly due to severe heat, strong winds, unexploded ordnance, and water shortages. Although 90% of the fire was initially brought under control, flames reignited in some areas.

Support from İHH Teams

İHH teams have been deployed to the fire zones since the fires began on July 5 to support firefighting efforts. By the third day of the fire, the teams switched to a shift system and continued their interventions. Firefighting operations took place in the Turkmen Mountain areas of Kastal and El Bueke as well as in the Kerenkük village.

Due to partial containment of the fire and the intense work of aerial vehicles sent from Türkiye, İHH teams crossed back into Türkiye from Syria. Fifteen volunteers are standing by, ready for duty in case further support is requested.
