A total of 903 people have lost their lives so far in the floods and landslides which took in the mountainous region in northern Rio de Janerio. The disaster damaged 2.960 houses, leaving 13.000 people homeless. It is estimated that the disaster which affected regions such as Teresopolis, Nowa Friburgo, Petropolis, Sumidouro and Sao Jose do Vale do Rio Preto led to a material damage of $1.2 billion.
The IHH took immediate action to take aid to the region after what was termed as the biggest disaster which hit the region. In cooperation with its partner in the region, a Latin American Islamic foundation, the IHH distributed aid supplies such as food, formula, clothing and cleaning materials to the flood victims. The families who received the aid supplies sent their thanks and greetings to the benevolent Turkish nation.
