The last and most comprehensive of the global consultation meeting of the World Humanitarian Summit was held between October 14 -16 in Geneva, Switzerland.

IHH Deputy President Durmuş Aydın attended the meeting along with around one thousand participants from around the world in order to exchange ideas about the future of the humanitarian relief.

In his opening remarks of the World Humanitarian Summit Global Consultation, UN Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator Stephen O'Brien said that humanitarian relief is needed more than ever as thousands of people are affected by wars, natural disasters, famine and displaced.

O’Brien, who quoted that 20-million people out of which 6 million are children are suffering famine in Sahel region in Africa, said that "Only this year more than one hundred million people are in need of humanitarian aid and protection. If this vulnerable population were to make up a country it would count as the 12th biggest country in the world. Due to the armed conflicts in the world 14,3 trillion American dollars are waster every year,” he said.

"Armed conflicts create the biggest chaos”

O’Brien highlighted that the underlying reason of all major crisis are the political deadlocks resulting in armed conflicts and added that more than 60 million people were forced to flee their homes due to oppression and violence especially in Syria, Iraq and Southern Sudan.

O'Brien called out to the participants to come forward with their ideas about how to help people affected from crisis during 3-day consultation prior to the World Humanitarian Summit to be held in Istanbul on May 2016.

“Synthesis report” of the consultation

Eight regional and two theme consultations participated by 23.000 people from NGOs, private and public sector, youth organizations, and from diverse backgrounds, have been so far held to prepare for the summit. The proposals about human dignity, security, improving healing, cooperation and finance submitted during these consultations came out in “Consultation Synthesis Report.” The results of the regional meetings and the synthesis report were discussed in the global consultation and proposals aimed to contribute to the preparations for the World Humanitarian Summit were submitted.
