IHH teams in Haiti
Teams from the IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation travelled to Haiti on the first anniversary of a strong earthquake which struck the country on Jan. 12 last year. The teams provided clothing and food
Haiti, Turkey 25.01.2011

The 7.0 magnitude quake which took place in the poor Caribbean country Haiti affected three million people.

Haiti is marking the first anniversary of an earthquake which killed more than 250.000 people and injured hundreds of thousands of others. The country had to deal with a hurricane, flood, cholera outbreak and violence which erupted following presidential elections throughout the year after the quake which also left millions of people homeless. The progress is very slow for the country’s reconstruction.

Although one year has passed over the quake, Haiti has not yet recovered. The Haitian government has made no progress in addressing the problems in infrastructure, housing and medical services. Around 800.000 people whose houses were demolished in the quake are now living in shanty houses, they are still in need of proper houses. The big disaster has suddenly changed everyone’s lives in the country negatively. No solution has yet been found for the situation of the hundreds of thousands of orphans.

Haiti is like a ghost country. Many diseases being mainly cholera have broken out in the country due to use of unclean water, insufficient nutrition and unhygienic conditions in the aftermath of the earthquake. 3.759 people have died from cholera so far.

The IHH teams which took emergency aid to the region following the quake are again in the region on the first anniversary of the quake.

The teams have again distributed emergency aid to the needy families as well as providing some families with financial assistance. Financial donations were also made to some schools and hospitals. The IHH teams also visited 53 orphans who are taken care of by the foundation and saw how they were doing.

The IHH teams continue their activities in the region.
