SouthAsia, Moro 16.02.2010

There has been a conflict going on between the Philippine government and Muslim Moro people for years. Moro Muslims, whose rights and liberties are restricted, have been fighting for independence since 1970s. The conflict has resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths and displacement of many.

The armed conflict that is centered in Mindanao region of the Philippines has hit children the most just like all other conflicts worldwide. Thousands of children have been made orphan by the conflict.

The children made orphan by the war in Mindanao have a place to take refuge in now.

The IHH inaugurated the orphanage building it started constructing in June 2009. Hacı Şerefoğlu orphanage, built in Mindanao, will provide shelter to homeless orphans.

The two-floor building was built on an area of 288 square-meters. It has nine bedrooms, a security room, two small libraries, one classroom and one computer room.

Fifty orphans will be sheltered at the orphanage.

Muslims of Mindanao have been fighting the Christian Philippine government for years. Muslims used to be the majority group in Mindanao but this situation changed after the government resettled Christians in the region. Muslims of Mindanao are fighting for independence under the name of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
