Africa, Mali, Turkey 14.12.2012

IHH teams paid a visit to the D’jene mosque in Mali which represents the country’s cultural heritage and donated 250,000 African franks for the maintenance of the mosque. The mosque is one of the symbols of the West Africa.

The imam of the mosque said he is grateful to Turkey for the country’s support to the maintenance of the mosque. He said there are many handwritten works in the region and that they need support for the preservation of these works for the Islamic world.

The mosque, located in the basin of the Niger River, has a symbolic importance as it represents the big Islamic civilizations established in West Africa. The foundation of the mosque which was made of mud, was laid in the 12th century. The mosque was damaged over time due to floods. It was given its current shape in 1907.
