An earthquake of 5.5 magnitude occurred in Elazığ with its epicenter in Başyurt village in Karakoçan District. The quake that was also felt in neighboring provinces killed 41 people and wounded over 50 inhabitants, 10 of them seriously.
Aid agencies were mobilized to prevent further deaths from post-quake conditions. The IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation teams rushed to the quake area immediately.
IHH aid workers in Elazığ and neighboring provinces of Bingöl, Malatya and Diyarbakır were diverted to Karakoçan. The workers delivered blankets, coats, toppers, and foodstuff to quake survivors, and joined rescue works.
Another aid team was dispatched from Istanbul to Elazığ to take part in aid delivery.
