Palestine, MiddleEast, Turkey 09.01.2009

People of Turkey continue protesting the ongoing Israeli offensive in Gaza. Tens of thousands of people gathered at Beyazıt Square after the Friday prayers to condemn Israel. Funeral prayers were held in absentia for the Palestinians killed during the protest rally organized by the IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation, Mazlum-Der, Özgür-Der and a number of nongovernmental organizations. The protesters shouted takbirs and anti-Israeli slogans. Speaking during the protest, Professor Ahmet Ağırakça said resistance is not a one-day action, but will continue until the entire Islamic world is liberated. He recalled Gaza is resisting despite heavy weaponry used by the Israeli military and will eventually triumph.

Egypt is preventing flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza by refusing to open its border with Gaza, İhsan Süreyya Sırma said and criticized the silence of the international community against the ongoing strikes. Sırma claimed Israel disrespected its own religion by committing massacre on the Sabbath day, adding "Do not support Israeli actions by buying Israeli-affiliated merchandise."

A joint press release was delivered after speeches that called on the Turkish government to freeze relations with Israel.
