Children freeze to death in Syria with arrival of winter
Syrians who fled the violence in inner parts of Syria and took refuge in shanty camps they established close to Turkish border are undergoing more difficult times with the arrival of winter.
Syria 17.12.2013

According to what Burak Karacaoğlu, who is from IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation’s Syria press desk reported, there are around 200,000 Syrians living in 23 tent cities established close to Turkish border. During these days when cold weather hit the region, around 50,000 children living in these camps face the threat of freezing to death.

Examinations made by teams from IHH Syria Studies Hatay Coordination Center revealed that snowfall continues heavily in the region, it is very difficult for Syrians to warm themselves up in tents and newly-born babies and little children are under the risk of freezing to death.

Last week, more than 10 children froze to death in many parts of Syria. Considering the fact that winter has just begun, deaths of children due to cold weather is feared to increase in the upcoming weeks.

Two children frozen to death in Atma town

During IHH teams’ delivery of aid in Atma town in Idlib, two Syrian children, one of whom is six-month-old while the other one is two-year-old, lost their lives due to cold.
Karacaoğlu said the children were laid to rest in Atma, adding that the situation of those in the camps is heartbreaking.

“There are around 30,000 Syrians in the camps and cold affects children most. So, we need to collect relief for the Syrians in the camps and take it to them as soon as possible,” he added.
