Europe, Balkans, Macedonia 04.02.2009

Muslim communities worldwide are expressing their concern over the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza. A number of Macedonian NGOs have mobilized to help the people of Gaza.

Macedonia’s Ensar Association, Clemency Association, Al-Hilal Association, Bamirsia and Kalliri Miresise, MATUSITEB, Muslim Youth Forum, Vision M, Al-Kalem, Students Club and ARDHMERIA have launched an aid campaign in support of Gaza.

The NGOs, united under the name of Palestine Solidarity Platform and headed by Sabahuddin Mahmuti, handed €73,500 they have raised in a short period to the IHH. The money will be spent to build a unit of a planned woman and children hospital.

A press conference was held at the IHH headquarters ahead of the delivery of aid money.

Sabahuddin Mahmuti, the coordinator of Gaza aid campaign, said “We held rallies to protest the Israeli aggression in Gaza. The aid campaign we initiated drew huge support from Macedonians. We collected aid kind as well as cash donations. We are now handing the €73,500 we raised to the IHH to deliver it to the people of Gaza.”

Recalling the recent wars in the Balkans, Suleyman Baki, president of Ensar Association and MATUTISEB, said “We are aware of the suffering of the Gazan people, because we suffered from similar pains in the near past. We hope the modest aid we collected will alleviate the suffering of the Gazan people to some extent.”

IHH executive board member Hüseyin Oruç expressed his contentment over the growing concern for Palestine in the Balkans.

The donations of the Macedonian people will be used to build a unit of a planned women and children hospital in Gaza, he added.
