IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation, which is supporting 24,100 orphan children from 36 countries as of March 2012 with regular assistance, organized Orphan Solidarity Days between 16-31 March. Groups composed of IHH staff members, volunteers, donors, health workers, and press members visited the regions where our foundation operates within the scope of the Orphan Solidarity Days, which aims to draw attention of the Turkish and world public to problems and needs of 165 million orphans around the world. The teams met with orphans in Turkey as well as Palestine, Iraq, Lebanon in the Middle East; Somalia, Sierra Leone, Chad, Ethiopia, Mauritania, Malawi, Tanzania, Burkina Faso in Africa; Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka, Pattani, Pakistan in Asia; Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania in the Balkans; Chechnya in the Caucasia. Orphan care projects in Yemen, Ghana, Sudan, Djibouti, Aceh, Philippines/Mindanao, Jammu Kashmir, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Ecuador were carried out through our local partner organizations.
A number of organizations were carried out in the visited regions depending on local needs such as clothing and stationery aid, health screening, orphan wedding ceremony, circumcision ceremony, blanket-mattress distribution, food aid, paying for expenses of orphanages, and assistance to families of orphans (distribution of sewing machine, sesame grinding machine, milking cows, etc.). The projects were prepared in accordance with needs of local orphans. In addition, orphan care activities of local partner organizations were inspected closely and they were advised on future projects. Based on assessments and analyses, first steps for possible projects in the coming years were taken.
